The trilogy was very, very good, but also about as sad as you can get in that time period without delving directly into the Holocaust (although it's in there). By now though, there's a set expectation for that sort of sadness with any book about WWII. Long and short, if anyone else comes back to this post, read the trilogy. It's a really good trilogy.
