In MOTHER 2 and MOTHER 3, Shigesato Itoi sometimes included little references to real-life shops and restaurants in Japan that he really liked. For example, a fellow in Fourside talks about how if he dug up treasure, he’d go to Japan to live it up. In the MOTHER 2 version of the script, he goes on to say that he’d specifically go to the Katsuman restaurant in Tokyo and order three of ...Read More »

A few days ago, there was a Japanese auction for super-rare MOTHER 2 dev documents used during the game’s development. What interesting timing, after we took a look at some early MOTHER 2 beta/in-development stuff just a few days ago The auction’s title was something like “Nintendo MOTHER 2 Dev Documents for Debugging – Rare Item from Back Then”. The description was...Read More »

Continuing with the latest post I made about Banpresto’s giant Mr. Saturn plushes, I realized that even with all this middleman stuff, they’d never really know what the demand outside of Japan is. So, if you’d like to let Banpresto know that there’s demand for Mr. Saturn plushies outside of Japan (and other MOTHER merchandise in general), here’s how you can do it. Th...Read More »

UPDATE: If you’d like to contact Banpresto and let them know there’s a demand for this kind of stuff outside of Japan, see here. Here’s a follow-up to the story about the new giant Mr. Saturn plushies. A few weeks ago, Itoi’s company (known as Hobonichi) interviewed the main creator of these new Mr. Saturn monstrosities. I’ve translated that little interview below. I ...Read More »

No, this isn’t an official series. While one would be cool, for now we fans have to do things ourselves. That’s just what ardwickofonett does every once in a while. I guess this particular video was made for a Starmen.Net contest. I don’t remember which one, but in any case, I really like it a lot I’m not sure what it is, but I think I especially like this video because ...Read More »

In 2007, KingDarian and I ponied up a ton of money to get our hands on a whole bunch of really old Japanese game magazines that had to do with the MOTHER games. On some occasions we hit the jackpot, like with this Nov. 1992 issue of Super Famicom Magazine. This is one of the earliest looks we have of MOTHER 2. It was shortly after this that the game was reprogrammed from scratch with the help of H...Read More »

These used to be somewhat common back in the day, and I really miss them, as they’d be perfect for something like EB Central. But Ninten1 made a really cool and memorable one, so here it is. It’s like Where’s Waldo, only EarthBound-style See if you can find these things! Ness Robot Ness Nude Ness Pajama Ness Paula Jeff Poo The Runaway 5 (the ones not dressed in all black) ...Read More »

If you want a new kind of challenge in EarthBound, try these codes courtesy of Nitrodon PAR: C0281D80 Game Genie: 6D4F-7704 If that code seems to freeze the game sometimes, add this other code too: PAR: C0281E1A Game Genie: FC4F-7764 This makes enemies appear a LOT more often. The change can sometimes be staggering. This is what it looks like when the game detects it’s on a pirated cartri...Read More »

As far as I know, there are only two videos out there of EarthBound 64 in action. Every once in a while I look at them again and each time I have a different feeling. Like “man this would’ve sucked as a 3D game” or “it could’ve been the best RPG on the N64″ or “thank god it was released for the GBA instead” or “Man, I wonder what the story woul...Read More »

This week, Shigesato Itoi and his company of 40+ people are all on vacation in Bali. I think this is the second time he’s done this. It’s crazy that he can afford to fly that many people out there and have them all stay there for a week, then send them all back. But he’s Itoi. Anyway, today, on his site, he left this message before leaving. It reminded me of stuff in MOTHER 3 som...Read More »
